Over 1,400 miles travelled. 240 games won. 37 sets won. 2 major victories over nationally ranked opponents. And, 1 shocking loss at the hands of fifth-ranked Williams.
The Washington and Lee women's tennis team traveled to San Antonio last weekend, winning two matches against Trinity University (TX) and Pomona-Pitzer but falling to Williams College 5-4.
The Generals dominated over Trinity, capturing all nine matches for a 9-0 victory. Senior Emily Applegate cruised at first singles 6-1, 6-3, while sophomore Katie Tabb had little problems at second singles, winning 6-4, 6-0.
Senior captain Ginny Wortham was victorious at third singles, and junior Kelly Will took fifth singles 6-2, 6-3.
At fifth singles, senior captain Kristen McClung only surrendered two games, winning 6-0, 6-2, and junior Leah Weston cruised to a straight set win at sixth singles.
In doubles action, Applegate paired up with McClung to take first doubles 8-2. Tabb and Weston combined for a 8-4 win at second doubles. At third doubles, Will and Wortham teamed up for an 8-1 victory.
In the match against eighth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, the Generals were stellar, failing to lose a single match.
Applegate was pushed to three sets, pulling out a tough 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory at first singles. Tabb fought hard for her straight set victory at second singles, winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Both Wortham and Will cruised to straight set victories for the Generals. Wortham only lost three games, winning 6-2, 6-1, while Will only lost a single game, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Weston won her match at fifth singles 5-4, which was shortened because of the weather. McClung also cruised at sixth singles, willing 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles action, Applegate and Tabb held on for a close 8-6 victory, as did Weston and Wortham. McClung and Will only surrendered a single game at third doubles winning 8-1.
The Williams match was particularly difficult for the Generals.
