The W&L baseball team swept a doubleheader against Roanoke on Saturday afternoon winning the first game, 3-1, and the nightcap, 11-6.

After the Maroons jumped out to an early lead in the first inning of the day game, the Generals came back with a two-spot in the bottom of the second inning with RBI singles from junior James Madden and junior Tim Livingston. Senior catcher Jordan Wesley gave the Generals a cushion, adding a solo home run for the team in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesley and Madden each went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Livingston was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Senior designated hitter Richard Garland went 3-for-3. Senior righthander Clayton Edwards improved to 5-1 on the season, tossing a complete game. Edwards shut down the Roanoke offense, surrendering only one run through seven innings.

Livingston said, "I can't imagine any ODAC foe who would want to face him right now in the tournament. He's been the most dominant pitcher in the league, hands down."

Both Garland and Edwards have been leaders on the team this season.

Edwards said, "Richard Garland has been our biggest contributor with the stick this year. He's hitting over .400 and is the guy you want at the plate when the game is on the line."

In the nightcap, the Maroons jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the second, but the Generals came right back in the bottom of the fourth, posting seven runs. Madden led the comeback for the Generals with a grand slam home run to right field. Livingston added a two-RBI single in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh. On the game, Madden went 3-for-5 with four RBI's, and Livingston went 2-for-3 with three RBI's. One of the team's main strengths this season has been in their bullpen.

"Our bullpen with Jeff Pharis, Brendan Clark, and Jim Plantholt has been strong all year," Livingston said. "We have faith that if we can keep it the game within reach in the later innings, we can always put together a rally and win."

Another strength for the Generals has been their incredible depth.

"I'd have to say the biggest strength we have this year that we haven't had in the past is depth," Garland said. "We've got a lot of talent in the lineup, so much so that guys who would have started and hit towards the middle of the lineup in past years aren't even starting. The number of good, quality pitchers we have is also much higher than in years past and that will be very important to have for the tournament."

The Generals return to the diamond on Wednesday when they host SVU. Wesley said the team has big goals for the future.

"We should continue playing great baseball and make a serious run for the ODAC championship. In my four years here, I believe that this is our best opportunity to win it all," he said.
