New languages. New faces. New cultures. New knowledge.
Starting this summer, this will be the case for some of our very own W&L community members.
Two students and one faculty member were recently awarded with respective Fulbright Grants and a Watson Fellowship to travel the globe.
Domnica Radulescu, a professor of French and Italian and head of the Women's Studies Program here at W&L has received a Fulbright Grant. Alongside Professor Radulescu are seniors Will Townes, who also received a Fulbright Grant, and Ben Long who was awarded a Watson Fellowship.
Long's grant will allow him to study cattle farming in Switzerland, South Africa, Argentina, Australia, and Turkey. "I had never really thought of farming in other parts of the world until I studied abroad in Austria the summer after my sophomore year," says Long. "The fact that I grew up on a farm just outside of Lewisburg, WV made this a perfect idea for the Watson Fellowship."
Professor Radulescu's grant will allow her to spend the fall 2007 semester in Romania. She will be teaching theater and gender and helping to develop a Master's program in theater. "Romania and Eastern European studies and in particular theater have been an important part of my scholarly interests," says Radulescu. "I had also been quite intrigued for awhile by women playwrights and the emergence of feminist performances on Romanian theater stages.
Townes' grant will allow him to study and experiment with species interaction within the rainforests of the Philippines. "I've always tried to balance my two passions- intellectual life and being outdoors, and it struck me that I could do this by becoming a tropical ecologist," says Townes. "A better understanding of Philippines forest ecology can help us realize why tropical forests are worth conserving for future generations."
The Fulbright Grant and Watson Fellowship are highly competitive international scholarships. According to the Fulbright Program, W&L has been named one of the top 25 Fulbright-producing liberal arts colleges in the country. The Fulbright Program is the largest international exchange program to provide opportunities for students and professionals.
