The Generals baseball team, coming off their significant losing streak of the season in which they dropped a doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan and then a midweek game to Bridgewater, rebounded in a big way to start a new positive run.
Prior to the losing streak, W&L had won nine in-a-row, but then began to struggle when their bats went cold. Even though the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan and the Eagles of Bridgewater were the two teams ranked ahead of the Generals in the preseason ODAC poll, the team was frustrated with the losses and knew that they would rebound in a big way, which is exactly what they did.
On Saturday, the Blue and White took the field against ODAC-foe Lynchburg, and did exactly what they set out to do: took two. "
Takin' two' is one of the many sayings that goes on in the dugout, and it's always good to come through and do that" said sophomore center fielder Terrence McKelvey.
In the first game, the Generals were lead by the right arm of ace Clayton Edwards, who allowed just one run on five hits en route to a 3-1 victory. At the plate, sophomore Andrew Henderson hit his first homerun of the season and McKelvey was 2-for-3. In the second game, W&L spotted the Hornets five runs, but in sticking with another motto, "chipping away", fought their way back into the game, and tied it up heading into the ninth inning. In that inning, freshmen sensation and closer extraordinaire Jimmy Plantholt held the Hornets down in the ninth so the bats of the Generals could go to work. W&L loaded the bases with no outs, and then the star of the day, Edwards, who was playing third base this time, hit a sacrifice fly to plate the winning run. Edwards led the Generals with three hits and that game winning RBI, and Plantholt picked up his second win of the season.
On Tuesday, the Generals went out and got revenge against rival Bridgewater, taking the game by a score of 7-4. The game was back and forth until the seventh inning, when the Blue and White broke it open. Tied at three, freshmen Will Lewis knocked in the go-ahead run, setting the table for the big moment of the day, when senior Richard Garland laced a ball over the left field fence to put the Generals ahead for good. Sophomore Brendan Clark threw two scoreless innings in relief of starter Chuck Davidson, to pick up his first win of the season. Plantholt shut the door again, but did not pick up a save.
With those wins, the Generals improved to 14-6, and 8-3 in the ODAC. The continue a long home-stand with a game on Thursday against Shenandoah, a doubleheader Saturday against Roanoke, and a single game Sunday against St. Mary's. Be sure to make it out on Saturday as the football team's ring ceremony will be between the two games.
