Washington and Lee women's tennis team will be traveling to San Antonio this week to participate in the Fab Five tournament, riding a perfect 12-0 record into their biggest test of the season.

The Fab Five is a tournament that features teams ranked atop the national Divison III rankings. The teams travel from across the nation, playing matches in a round-robin style tournament.

Senior Emily Applegate said, "Fab Five is a good indicator of how we are doing in the season. It's good to see how we match up against [the top ranked teams] so far and what we need to work on before Nationals. It is also good practice because there is not too much pressure- it works like a round robin, so there is no outright winner."

This past week, the Generals scored big wins over Division I opponent JMU, and conference foes Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Virginia Wesleyan. The Generals toppled the Duke Dogs of JMU by a score of 5-4.

Applegate, the reigning NCAA Division III singles champion, was forced to fight for her victory at first singles, winning in three sets by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Sophomore Katie Tabb won easily at second singles, while senior captain Ginny Wortham cruised to victory at third singles. After a close first set, junior Leah Weston only dropped a single game over the course of the final two sets, cruising to a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-0 victory at fifth singles. In doubles action, Applegate and Tabb were victorious at first doubles for the Generals, winning 8-4.

Last Thursday, the Generals only dropped one game over the course of 15 sets in their victory over Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Junior Kelly Will and sophomore Tori Christmas blanked their opponents at first and second singles, and freshmen Blair Brzeski and Lyndsey Johannson cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories at third and fourth singles for W&L.

Despite their unblemished record on the season, the Generals will face many tough tests when they take the courts at Trinity College, in San Antonio. Doubles is an area where the Generals have been putting in a considerable amount of working, going into the Fab Five.
