Twenty-six schools in the southwest region competed at the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) conference held at Radford University from March 14-18, 2007.

Even though the company is in its first year at W&L, the Dance Company's "Veil of Ignorance", choreographed by W&L Dance Artistic Director Jenefer Davies was chosen as one of ten outstanding and exemplary artistic works at the conference. The modern dance was performed by Alice Shih '08 and Marjie Zethraus '07.

"This was a really great honor because we competed against schools that have MFA programs and have been nationally established for years. This is only our first year," Shih said.

11 members of the W&L Repertory Dance Company also presented student-choreographed work for adjudication and a dance at the informal concert. The members had to audition for the company at the beginning of the year and have rehearsal every week. The week of the performance the girls practiced every day, and the day of the performance, all day.

The company serves as a one credit class and the members must participate for two semesters. The choreographers of the different pieces choose which members they want to dance in their pieces.

It wasn't all about the competition at the ACDFA's conference, as the members got to take Master's classes taught by guest artists. The conference's primary focus is to support and affirm the role of dance in higher education as well as to promote the wealth of talent and creativity that is prominent throughout college and university dance departments.

The conference provided an opportunity for college and university dance programs to perform away from their own academic setting and gave them exposure to a vareity of programs.
