Twenty five unique individuals were nominated for the Unsung General of the Year Award. Chosen by their peers and faculty, each of these individuals demonstrated outstanding dedication to Washington and Lee University, their fellow students, and the greater community. However, from among this amazing field, one was chosen, selected by her fellow students as the Unsung General of the Year.
Senior Beth Lidinsky's unfailing dedication to Nabors Service League, where she has served as both the health and disabled chair for the past year and as the publicity chair for the past two years, earned her this recognition for her long, unsung service.
In addition to Nabors, Lidinsky is very involved in her community in other ways. A member of the premed honor society Alpha Epsilon Delta, Lidinsky has been on the Honor Roll every year. She's volunteered at numerous locations off campus and will be attending the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland next year.
Other Generals were recognized for their invaluable contributions to student life as well.
"I feel so very lucky that I was noticed," said the Unsung General for the Performing Arts, Lauren Sapikowski. Not only is she the managing director of Mindbending Productions, Sapikowski also manages their budget, is responsible for reserving the space for them to work and perform, and she's in charge of recruitment. Sapikowski was also a lead in an impressively successful venture to allow students from W&L to perform in Edinburgh, Scotland, over the summer.
"Having the award means that I have contributed to this amazing aspect of the W&L community," Sapikowski said. "And any way to help is an honor in itself."
Her dedication to and love of W&L was shared by all the honorees of the Celebrating Student Success Ceremony. The other Unsung Generals included Katharine Greene, who was recognized for her work in Publications/Media as editor of the Ring-tum Phi, Erin Tainer, who received acknowledgement in the category of Recreation for her dedication to the Outing Club, and Matt Krieg, who was recognized for his hard work in W&L's student Government.
