Experience. Commitment. Understanding. Leadership. Humor.
These are just a handful of words that W&L community members have used to describe newly elected provost June R. Aprille.
The provost position is considered the second highest ranking position at the University. Aprille will be responsible for overall management and budgeting of all academic programs, as well as for the administrative management of various other segments of the W&L community. She will also be in charge of recruiting new faculty, evaluating faculty and administrators, and executing the University's academic goals.
Aprille will be leaving her provost position at the University of Richmond and taking the place of current W&L Provost H. Thomas Williams. Williams is stepping down from the provost position this summer.
According to the chair of the provost search committee, Professor of Law Robert T. Danforth, the selection process was tremendously competitive. Aprille was one of many exceptionally qualified candidates.
"We identified Dr. Aprille after a national search that produced an extraordinarily rich pool of candidates," Danforth said. "The pool included sitting and former provosts and other chief academic officers, sitting and former deans, and others with high level administrative experience at peer institutions from throughout the country."
Danforth said the search committee had no trouble identifying various attributes that made Aprille a desirable candidate.
"In the search committee's view, she had just the right combination of experiences and attributes that our committee had hoped to find: an understanding of and passionate commitment to the liberal arts, an understanding of and extensive experience with pre-professional and professional programs, a background as a superb teacher and established scholar, a demonstrated commitment to diversity, and most importantly, an extraordinary sense of the ideals and values that make Washington and Lee such a wonderful place to teach and learn."
