The 100th Fancy Dress Ball went off with a bang, literally. Fireworks topped a lavish list of events that included a confetti drop and midnight breakfast making Saturday one of the most memorable nights in Fancy Dress history.
"I think it was an unforgettable event." said senior Niki Tsiknakis who co chaired the event.
Invitations touted this year's ball as "The Party of the Century". Guests were encouraged to wear shades of black and white and don extravagant masks. Truman Capote's legendary Black & White Ball at New York City's Plaza Hotel inspired the theme.
"You would have never guessed you were in a gym." said Staci Karpova of the decorations in Doreemus Gymnasium.
She explained that the larger gym was draped and carpeted in black while the smaller gym was decorated in white. Extravagant hanging masks provided the final touch in both gymnasiums.
Construction of decorations began weeks before the dance in the activities pavilion, according to sophomore Christina Merchant. The committee moved decorations into the gym only two days before the dance. She added that for committee members, the smaller decorations such as mirrors and feathers were the most tedious part of their job.
Each member of the Fancy Dress Steering Committee was required to put in at least thirty hours of planning or decorating. Most did so during the week prior to the dance.
Karpova attributes the success of the decorations to the vision of Tsiknakis and fellow co chair Lily de Grazia as well as decorations co chairs Mary Stuart Couch and Sarah Helms.
"I think Niki and Lily did a great job. They were organized and hard working and had great ideas."
Every year the Fancy Dress receives a large budget but because of the centennial celebration, this year's topped $90,000. Much of that went into the night's fireworks display.
Rumors buzzed for weeks about the surprise set for 10:30 and by the time the ball arrived most were expecting the spectacular light show. According to Tskinakis, it had been in the works since last year.
