Sweeney, Edwards lead Generals to Big Weekend
The Washington and Lee baseball team won five games without suffering a loss this past week, picking up wins over Southern Virginia during the week, and then sweeping double headers over ODAC-foe Emory and Henry and Mount Aloysius. Led by senior shortstop Ray Sweeney, who was named ODAC player of the week, the Generals pounded out 45 runs in their four weekend games. Sweeney notched his first two homeruns of the season, and hit .417 over the weekend.
Also leading the way was senior pitcher Clayton Edwards, who was dubbed ODAC pitcher of the week after throwing a complete game shutout against Emory and Henry. He allowed only four hits and struck out 11 Wasp batters.
The Generals return to action this week Wednesday versus Guilford, and then over the weekend versus Eastern Mennonite on Saturday and Mary Washington on Sunday.
Male Laxers split a pair of games
The W&L lacrosse men split their two games this week, picking up a win over York College, but falling to the Gettysburg Bullets, the second ranked team in the nation. The Generals dominated York College for the start, leading 9-1 at half, cruising to a 9-3 victory. Leading the way in that game for the Blue and White was sophomore Seth Fishman, who tallied his first career hat trick. In the loss on Saturday at Wilson Field, W&L fell behind quickly and was never able to catch up to the high powered Bullets, who took the contest 14-5. Sophomore midfielder Harry St. John tallied four points including three goals, and Tim Skeen notched three points. The Laxmen return to action on Saturday at Washington College.
Women's Lacrosse, Robinson,
Dominatee
The 11th ranked women's lacrosse team continued their domination of opponents by defeating two ODAC foes last week. On Wednesday, the lady Generals traveled to Roanoke and defeated the Maroons 11-4. Sophomore Kelsi Robinson led the Generals with four points, and freshmen Britten Matthews scored three goals to register her first career hat trick.
On Saturday, the Generals took the field in Lexington against another ODAC rival, Randolph Macon, and defeated them easily 13-7. Senior Kelly Evans totaled four goals, while Kelsi Robinson posted her second four point game in a row. Those two games allowed her to be named ODAC player of the week, the third General to get such an award this past week. The Lady Laxers return to the field on Saturday to face the seventh ranked Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall at home.
