Washington and Lee University students finally had a chance to share their knowledge, their talent and their research this past Friday.
At W&L's second Science, Society and the Arts student research conference, the students became the teachers, presenting their work in a variety of ways.
The conference presentations included poster sessions, panel presentations, reading colloquia, art exhibits and performances in the Lenfest Center. Examples of participants included Journalism, Art, Theater, Music, and Science students.
Several students in varying disciplines participated in the book colloquia.
According to Paten Hughes '08, a student member of the SSA organizing committee, there were about 150 proposals presented at the conference.
Hughes was excited that W&L students had this opportunity.
"At other colleges, you get to be a part of research,"said Hughes. "I think it was nice to give [W&L] students a chance to take a day off andcelebrate the work that they have done."
The conference also included the keynote address by guest speaker, Dr. Mario Livio, a researcher and writer in the sciences. According to the SSA website, Dr. Livio is a Senior Astrophysicist at the Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute. His lecture was entitled "SYMMETRY: From Human Perception and Mate Selection to the Laws of Nature."
Hughes explained that the entire committee contributed greatly to the success of the conference.
She particularly praised the chair of the committee,Professor Robin Le Blanc of the Politics department.
In an email the Journalism Department Head,Professor Brian Richardson, sent to the Journalism students, he said, "[Professor Le Blanc] spent countless hours in the past two years organizing SSA."
Hughes said that Professor Le Blanc emailed her over the summer about serving on the committee.
"I never realized how much work goes into this," Hughes said. "I cannot stress how much work Professor Le Blanc put into it."
