I'll admit that I was more nervous than usual heading into the February 10th dual with the Apprentice school. The fact that these wrestlers did not go to classes like environmental studies and fantasy literature was intimidating. On the team's roster, majors were not listed but rather a ship building occupation such as electrician, welder, or shipfitter.
These were not college boys; they were shipbuilding men.
Although the Builders are not a sanctioned NCAA team, they are very competitive and wrestle with a mixture of DI and DIII teams. In fact, they have beaten some DI teams this year including Davidson and JMU. The Blue and White, however, were ready to take on the challenge and to continue their win streak. The match this past Saturday was another exciting win for the Generals wrestling team. With this victory 21-15 over Apprentice, the wrestlers have compiled an 8-3 record (the program has not had 8 wins in about twenty years). The match was close but, once again, the Generals wrestled tough in the clutch to pull out a win.
The match started at my weight class of 125 lbs. It was a grueling match that I ended up winning with a takedown in overtime 8-6. The intensity of the first match was carried throughout the entire dual meet. David Shubick added to the lead with another victory by decision 12-8. Including his scores in this match, David is now only two takedowns behind the all time W&L takedown record. The Builders fought back in the middleweights with three straight victories at 141 lbs, 149 lbs, and 157 lbs.
However, the Apprentice school did not have anyone to wrestle in the 165 lb and 174 lb weight classes. Jesse Sataloff, the starting 174 lb wrestler allowed Zak Colangelo to take the forfeit and he bumped up to wrestle at 184 lbs. He sealed the W and L victory with a hard fought match that he won 4-2.
The Generals will use this victory along with the rest of the team's February success to fuel a campaign for the Centennial Conference. The past two seasons the Generals have finished last at the conference championships. Washington and Lee wrestling Centennial Championships 2007 will hopeful make real the team's quest for the ring.
