The women's basketball team has made some impressive accomplishments this season: a 7-game winning streak (longest in W&L history), a first-ever home win against Roanoke, and another program first-win over nationally ranked Bridgewater (ranked 24th at the time).
Now the Lady Generals are one win away from tying the school record for most wins in a season. This team has been called the best and hardest-working team ever to play at W&L by the team captains, and senior captain Sarah Otey attributed the difference between this year and previous years to the team's ability to win close games.
The 7-game win streak was produced by playing with confidence that built up after each win.
"Before the win streak, we had lost several in a row, and we were sick of losing and had to dig deep and find the will to win. We stopped over-analyzing everything and simply had fun playing basketball." said junior guard Emily Wolff, who leads the team in assists per game at 2.4.
That confidence and determination has taken the Generals a long way this season, and the players are optimistic about their chances in the post-season.
"This team has the opportunity to accomplish more than any other W&L women's basketball team," junior captain and top-scorer (13.5 ppg) Kristen Krouchick says, "we already broke the record for the most consecutive wins, but we don't want to stop there." The "Lady Ballers" will have the chance to do just that during their next three regular season games (Hollins, 2/13, Emory & Henry, 2/16, and Lynchburg, 2/17).
With all the success this season, it would be easy for the Generals to take these last few games lightly for a few reasons. The team has defeated these teams earlier this season, E&H is only 4-14 in conference play, and Hollins is the worst team in the conference and has yet to win a game on their home court (where the Generals play them on the 13th).
Although the W&L team handed Hollins an embarrassing 90-26 defeat the last time they met, Senior captain Jess Hunsinger (averaging an impressive 3.5 blocks per game) says the team is not overlooking any opponent. "As a team, we continue to approach the rest of the season one game at a time. Our next opponent is Hollins and so for now that is our focus. Every single one of the games is important."
