Current Issue:

Administration goes after Big 4, Kappa Sig

Issue date: 2/14/07 Section: Opinion
Thus far, my winter term stats are impressive: one article, two hate mail letters. For you non-math majors, that's an astounding 2:1 ratio of hate mail to articles written. Has anybody ever been able to maintain that kind of success over a semester? Somebody get a pledge to look this up immediately. One of them even told me, "Barbaro is worth more than your life. I'm not joking." And the sad thing is they're right.

Moving on, the issue I want to discuss this week is the recent hazing investigation launched by our administration against five different fraternities. The center of the investigation appears to be Kappa Sig, but the "Big Four" of Phi Delt, Phi Kap, SAE and FIJI were also brought in for questioning. As many of you know, the "Big Four" is one of the richest traditions on campus, but ever since Beta was kicked off three years ago it has been more or less constricted to the "Big Three." Finally, a fraternity has stepped up to fill Beta's void. Through annual turmoil and scandal-written pledgeships, FIJI has continued to establish dominance by remaining #1 in GPA and by being among the largest frats on campus every year. One might think that FIJI is too northern of a fraternity to gain acceptance into the "Big Four," but rumor has it that their diversity has injected some life into the elite group.

Proving this dominance is Director of Greek Life Jason Rodocker, who honestly believes FIJI is one of the fiercest hazing fraternities on campus. Rodocker, in fact, has been quoted saying that FIJI, SAE and Phi Delt (all Big Four) are frats that he needs to keep a particularly close eye on. Meanwhile, Rodocker has stated that Kappa Alpha is the most exemplary fraternity on campus, one that other frats should model themselves after. KA joins this esteemed group of do-gooders featuring Phi Psi, Sig Ep and Snu.

While the administration's hazing investigation is not yet finished, it appears as though SAE, Phi Delt and Phi Kap are off the hook. Each came out of IFC interrogation unscathed. FIJI, the other "Big Four" frat to be questioned, would have done the same had their anonymous fraternity president not coughed up valuable pledgeship secrets. In hindsight, however, the honesty and integrity shown from this anonymous FIJI president will probably benefit the fraternity in the ongoing investigation.
