The Washington and Lee women's basketball team did not start the season the way they wanted to, going five and eight in their first 13 games, which included seven Old Dominion Athletic Conference losses. Since then, however, they have turned it all around, winning seven straight games. Five of those victories were in ODAC competition, which has allowed them to storm back onto the scene in the ODAC race. While Tuesday night's game is too close to publication to talk about, a win over Guilford in the Warner Center would give the Generals their thirteenth win, which would tie the program record.
This past week, the Generals picked up two huge ODAC victories, the first of which was over Randolph-Macon Women's College by a huge score of 71-34. The Blue and White were led by senior Jessica Huntsinger, who scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Those 13 rebounds allowed her to become the all-time leading rebounder in Washington and Lee history, and is on the verge of tallying 1,000 in her career. The Generals led by 21 points at half, and that lead never dwindled below 17 for the rest of the game as they cruised to the 37 point victory. More impressively, W&L had the edge in rebounds by a total of 59-28.
On Saturday in the Warner Center, the Generals picked up their second victory in as many nights by beating the Maroons of Roanoke, 55-50. The win allowed the team to pull even with Roanoke in the conference standings. Once again, W&L was led by all-everything center Jessica Huntsinger, who tallied another double-double. scoring a season-high 19 points to go with her 14 rebounds. Double-doubles are nothing special for Huntsinger though, who is averaging double figures in both scoring and rebounds for the season.
Kristen Krouchick, the Generals' leading scorer, tallied 12 in the game, including a key shot inside two minutes that broke a tie and put the Blue and White ahead for good.
If the Generals are able to keep playing the way they have been, they can continue this impressive run and be a very high seed in the ODAC tournament. They have five games left, all in the ODAC, four of which are against teams that they have already beaten this year. Breaking the record for wins in a season after the tough start would certainly be a great feat for the team, who will look to do more in the ODAC tournament.
