Dear Editors,
In last weeks article "Revenge of the Nerds" there was a minor factual error. My problem lies with the line "If people stepped in on the Thrilla in Manila, Ali never would have risen to God-like status." The Thrilla in Manila was the third fight between Ali and Joe Frazier in Quezon City of the Philippines. During the fight, Frazier's trainer Eddie Futch stopped Frazier from answering the bell after the 14th round, making Ali the victor. So, as anyone can see, someone did step in during the Thrilla in Manila: Eddie Futch. Futch wanted to protect his fighter who was almost blind by 14th round. Without Futch protecting his fighter, Ali may not have won the fight(anything is possible).
Furthermore, to imply that "real punches" are a W&L first is also a factual error. From the Palms to the fraternity brother who just gets too friendly with another brother's girlfriend, punches have occured before and they will occur again on our historic campus. Perhaps the writers of the article just don't know enough destructive, disturbed, and/or emotionally volatile people. And for that, I highly encourage them to meet more people.
