Since July, a search committee headed by President Ruscio has been working to find a new law dean. The position opened up last April when David Partlett left to become the new dean at Emory Law School in Atlanta.
Last April, President Ruscio named Charles S. Rowe Professor of Law Brian Murchison acting dean for the interim. The new dean will assume their position July 1.
Currently, the committee is in the "campus visits" stage of the search. Preliminary interviews took place off campus in December during which the committee whittled the list of applicants down to four.
During the critical campus visit, the candidate will be given an introduction to the community and the chance to assess whether W&L is a good potential match. They will also engage in discussion with faculty, staff, administration and a representative group of students.
Another big move took place last summer when athletic director of 17 years, Mike Walsh, made the switch to university development. For the past six months, Senior Assistant Director of Athletics Chuck O'Connell has served as the interim director.
The search for a new director commenced a little over two weeks ago. The committee, headed by Provost Williams, already has a large number of applicants. He explains that judgments will begin around the end of February. The committee hopes to be able to announce a decision by the end of March.
