This Week in Sports

Issue date: 1/31/07 Section: Sports
In the format of my normal column this week, I have decided to do three key aspects of the Super Bowl, since that is the biggest thing that's happening this week in sports. We'll see how it goes.

Peyton Manning and Rex Grossman:

This is the obvious match up, but it still needs to be touched on. Peyton Manning is already one of the best quarterbacks of all time, but obviously has that history of playing poorly in the playoffs. Grossman, on the other hand, has the reputation for being an awful quarterback, but has played solidly this year in his first trip to the playoffs. While their roles in this weekend's big game will be equally important, they could not be any more different. Peyton will be asked to win the game for the Colts by making plays on offense. If he doesn't go against this Bears team, the Colts will not win. Grossman is only asked not to lose the game, but that is a big task for a quarterback who has been known to have absolutely awful games.

Bob Sanders and the Colts Defense:

Can one free safety really make that much of a difference in a teams' run defense? Apparently, the answer is yes, if anyone has watched the great play of the Colts defense this playoffs, which turned great when safety Bob Sanders returned to the lineup. Whether it is through his leadership or through his skill as a football player that allows the defense to blitz more, he has made a huge difference. Their defense, one of the worst EVER against the run, has shut teams' ground games down in the three games this postseason. And to go along with that, Sanders has been everywhere, forcing turnovers and making huge plays for the Colts. We always knew that if the Colts could get a defense that did something, even anything, they would be scary. For the first two games of the playoffs the offense wasn't there, so they did not look scary. Then came the second half of the Patriots game, and now the Colts are scary with that defense.

GO COLTS! Peyton and the whole team are great football players on the field, and great men off the field. Most are very involved with our community, and are not "hot dogs. (Continued…)
