The Generals wrestling team still has not performed up to their potential this season. With a combined number of three place-winners in both the Ursinus and Messiah tournaments, the team was off to a slow start in December. However, the team seemed to come together with the start of the dual-meet season, defeating conference opponent Gettysburg 27-19 in a unified team effort.
The upward trend of improvement continued to this past Saturday at the W&L Invitational. The Generals had three individual champions, but finished 3rd behind conference opponents Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins. Freshman Sammy Brusca pinned Muhlenberg's Mike Tenenhaus in 4:28 to win the 125-pound weight class. The score was tied 2-2 when Brusca threw Tenenhaus to his back with a chin-whip. Junior Anthony Boniello defeated Scranton's Steve Tatum 3-1 with a thrilling takedown late in the third period to earn the 165-pund title. With less than twenty seconds left in the match, Boniello rose to the occasion, scoring a huge takedown to win it all. Co-captain, junior Jesse Sataloff, was the last of the team's champions. dominating Washington & Jefferson's Pat Wilson 11-2 in the 174-pound final. Earlier this season, Jesse was beating Wilson was suddently caught and pinned. This time, Sataloff got his revenge, taking Wilson down numerous times from neutral position to solidify his championship.
The team also had two runner-ups in Dave Shubick and Rob Terrin at the 133-pound and 141-pound weight classes, respectively. Shubick showed that he can wrestle with the best in a narrow loss to Muhlenberg's 6' 1", 133 lb. and nationally ranked Billy Hall. Terrin also lost a close match to a tough conference opponent in Johns Hopkins' Marco Priolo.
The Team had finalists in 5 out of the 10 weight classes. There were also a slew of other wrestlers who placed for the Generals. Tim Manson, Richard Knack, co-captain Max Courtney, and Kirk Adamson all placed fourth and contributed many team points.
Because not every team had full lineups, there were some intense challenge matches between W&L wrestlers. Tim Manson defeated Peter Lawrence 5-3 in a nail biter to even up their season series 1-1. Zak Colangelo had the misfortune to wrestle two other W&L wrestlers. Colangelo lost to team captain Jesse Sataloff and fellow freshman Richard Knack by pin. The tournament results forecast interesting challenge matches in the future.
Although the W&L Invitational was another step in the right direction for the wrestling squad, placing behind two conference rivals left the team seeking more improvement. Coach Franke, an experienced junior class, and lone senior Max Courtney have worked hard to get the program this far. Now, the team can continue to improve and work towards a Centennial conference championship.
