The W&L swim teams concluded their dual meet season with a pair of away meets last Saturday.
The Generals began the day with a morning meet against Division III powerhouse Johns Hopkins and concluded with the nightcap against Marymount. The teams dropped both meets to Hopkins while defeating both Marymount's men and women.
Johns Hopkins, perennially a difficult foe, defeated the W&L men 106-97 while dropping the women 107-86. Sophomore Michael Ginder won two individual events to lead the W&L effort against the Blue Jays, taking the 100 Backstroke in 53.86 and the 200 Freestyle in 1:43.23. The rest of the meet proved difficult for the men as the Blue Jays kept winning events.
On the women's side, the relay team of freshmen Jess Cobb and Amy Roberson, sophomore Abbie Sauter and junior Kristine Holda won both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay, clocking in at 1:55.78 in the medley and 1:44.83 in the free.
Holda also won the 50 Free, touching the wall in 26.27. The losses dropped the men to 5-2 for the season and the women to 7-6.
The nightcap against Marymount proved to be a little easier for the Generals. The double header day was meant to help prepare the teams for their championship meets, in which they will swim preliminary heats in the mornings and finals at night for three days straight.
Head Coach Kiki Jacobs told her team to look on the evening's races as finals action - and while Hopkins roundly defeated the Generals in the morning, the teams rebounded nicely during the evening meet.
Junior captain Clark Barrineau summed up the purpose of the meet best as the teams gathered for a cheer before the meet.
"Guys, this is the seniors' last meet - let's make it count. I want to see everyone up there cheering during the races," said Barrineau. With the pep talks finished, the team's roaring chant, "you know!", echoed from the walls and the meet began.
The men began by winning the 400 Medley Relay, as freshman Stuart Frankfort, sophomores Kevin Hayes and Max Pike and senior captain Chris Colby touched in at 3:41.89.
Colby also took the 200 Butterfly in 2:00.64, while Frankfort won the 200 IM in 2:08.99. Barrineau won both distance freestyle events, taking the 500 Free in 5:05.00 and the 1000 Free in 10:28.33.
On the women's side, Cobb, Roberson, Sauter and senior Suzie LaFleur won the 400 Medley Relay in 4:16.31. Sauter went on to win the 200 IM in 2:18.84 and the 200 Breaststroke in 2:32.94, while Holda kept her streak alive by winning the 100 Freestyle in 55.94 and the 200 Freestyle in 2:02.40.
Having concluded the dual-meet season, the teams will now spend a few weeks in lighter training to rest up for their respective conference meets.
The women will compete to defend their conference title at the ODAC Championships on February 18-20, while the men will travel to Wooster, OH from February 17-19th to defend their title as the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Champions.
