Dear Students, Faculty, Alumni and Friends,
It's finally spring and no one could be happier about it than all of us over here at The Trident. Spring is known as a time of growth, change and renewal. We'll be dealing with a lot of all three this spring term.
In terms of growth, our staff is ever expanding as is ours news coverage. We've added a few new editorial positions, and were constantly getting new writers. To better serve our readers, we will be focusing a little more on our surroundings. What goes on in Lexington and Rockbridge County affects our community so we think its important to do a better job of informing you about it. We won't exactly be sitting in on every Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors meeting, but rest assured, if something is going on off campus that will affect our student body, you'll know about it.
We're also planning on expanding the News Section by a few more stories a week. We think its important that you know about the bodies that govern us and what they do each week. Look for profiles of student leaders and stories on what's going on with the EC, SJC, SFHB, etc.
You'll also be able to find big changes outside the News Section. The Trident's look is getting a little dated and we've decided its time for a make over. We've hired a layout editor and purchased, The Idiot's Guide to Adobe InDesign. I personally have made all of my friends from other schools send me a copy of their student newspaper and the staff is discussing the strengths of each design. Expect a new and improved layout by the end of spring term. Were hoping to look snazzier than the Phi but they spy on us and stay a step ahead. They also have that cool fold over design.
We'll also be returning to online publication after a one year hiatus. Look for an updated site next week at thetrident.org.
We've had a rough winter. We've made a lot of mistakes and spent a lot of time learning from them. We plan to spend the rest of this year working to renew your trust in us as a news organization. Our first and perhaps most important step toward that goal has been to establish a code of ethics. It was certainly an undertaking but also a worthwhile project. We learned a lot in the process, and were reminded of many important journalistic values along the way. We know that it will ensure a stronger paper. The new code will follow this letter. Please feel free to share your thoughts and provide any feedback. We can be reached at trident@wlu.edu. You may also send me your comments directly to me at prattc@wlu.edu. Every story is followed by the email address of the author, please feel free to contact them as well.
A newspaper is meant to do more than provide news. It is also meant to be an open forum and an outlet for discussion. Never hesitate to add your voice to the discussion in the form of a letter to the editor or guest column. For better or for worse, a dialogue began this winter about the state of our community. As we played a dominant role in starting that discussion, we hope to play a positive role in continuing it.
Enjoy your spring term!

Sincerely,
Christina Pratt
